Reflective Teaching

Dear Friends
Last week we have completed discussion on Critical thinking. This week we are going to discuss on Reflective teaching. As Teacher Educator we need to reflect on different activities be it classroom teaching, doing research, taking sessions in the training, providing support to teachers / CRCCs. In this connection, reflect on our activities is the first step towards professional development.
I am attaching the link of one  handout and one video on reflective teaching.
Hope these two resources shall help you in comprehending the concept.
Write your own understanding of Reflective teaching and  what does a reflective teacher educator look like. Post your views here.
Happy reading.
Best wishes

  1. Thank you madam for giving us a comprehensive and practical input on reflection. Reflection is an important aspect for quality improvement in classroom practices. As teachers we must reflect on our work and also make our student teachers to learn how to reflect. Reflection always followed by implementing new strategies to come up with good product. Self Reflection plays vital role. Reflective dialogue between person or group also contribute towards adequate understanding about the process . For reflection Why and How based questions are most appropriate. So, we the teachers must reflect and orient our students to reflect their work.

  2. Thank you madam for posting.Being a teacher it is very important for us to be reflect continiously on our activities. We can improve our teaching through self-reflection.In our class room we conducted different types of activities through group work, peer work or individual work but there is less scope for self-observation & self-evaluation after the activity. This can be practiced through reflection beacuse learning is strongly associated with reflection and reflection gives a meaning to our experience and also we learn a lot from it.To review our learning experiences or to be life long learner we must make use of reflection. It is impossible for an individual to keep developing without the skill of reflection.
    Thanks.

    1. Thanks for the feedback. Reflection is absolutely essential for developing professionalism. After and during each activity, we have to look back and see what is happening, are we on our path to achieve the goal ?

  3. Thank u so much madam for the nice, important and informative article. As we all know that Reflection is an integral part of learning process which means thinking about our own teaching process. If we really thinking about the learning of our students then we have to reflect on our teaching process .Reflective teaching is the process of self observation and self evaluation , it helps us to think -: for what purpose we are going to teach a particular topic/area ,why its important for the students and how students will be benefited from that. The lacuna of teaching can be identified and accordingly modified/rectified in the next classes. It includes thinking and rethinking about performance of a teacher before, during and after class activities. All the three forms that are Reflection in action,Reflection on action and Reflection for action are beneficial for teachers, students as well as others as they supply opportunities to identify mistakes and correct them at practice.Hence we inspire others to reflect their action for their development.

But these three forms should be discuss comprehensively in PLC, by taking examples of classroom situations.

    1. Thanks for the feedback. Reflection in action takes place during an action and reflection on action takes place after an event has occurred. Reflection for action is thinking about future actions with the intention of improving or changing a practice.

  4. Thank you madam for this note on Reflective Teaching. It is a process where teachers think over their teaching practices, analyzing how something was taught and how the practice might be improved or changed for better learning out comes.it helps teachers in their professional development. As a teacher we should reflect on our work because it helps us to collect, record, and analyze everything that happened in the lesson. Reflection allows us to move from just experiencing into understanding.
A reflective Teacher Educator should develop greater self awareness about the values and beliefs informing their practices and decision making , understand the ethical nature of their work, examine the theories underpinning practice and engage in a continuous cycle inquiry and improvement.
As reflective Teacher Educator we should record our teaching, share that video in our PLC, invite colleagues to observe our class , ask the students for feedback etc..
    Thank u

  5. Madam u have shared a very important article that is reflection with us because we are teaching everyday but we don't know how much that class is effective for my students and that analysis can only be done through reflection. So reflection is a process of self observation and self evaluation for our better improvement. For self evaluation we have to record our class from which we can know where is our fault and according to that we can rectify ourselves. Reflection always follows some innovative techniques which can be implemented in our classroom situation. There are several forms of reflection like reflection in action and reflection on action both are equally important for us. Everyone must practise this reflection in their life to know our strengths and weaknesses. But for a teacher n for teacher educators it is very essential as we are the future makers.
    Thank u

  6. Thank you madam for sharing this article.Reflective teaching is a personal tool that teacher can use to observe and evaluate the way that they behave in the classroom.Reflecting teaching is a more systematic process of collecting, recording and analyzing a teachers thoughts and observations as well as those of their teachers. As a teacher educator we have to accept this techniques in our daily life which helps us to improve personally and professionally. If we don't think about to analyse and evaluate our professional practices then we cannot improve. By reflective teaching we can create and experiment new ideas and approaches which helps in our professional development.

  7. Thank you Madam for sharing this article. A person who wants to prosper and develop professionally must reflect on his/ her activities and practices. Moreover reflection provides an opportunity to explore more and more. It simply means self observation and self evaluation
Another significant point is that as a teacher/ teacher educator we must reflect on ourselves. Because without reflection we cannot think further. So for an effective teaching learning process we have to practice reflective teaching in our classroom.reflecting teaching not only helps to develop professionally but also it focuses on the students need and aspirations.
    Thank you

  10. According to Jack Richards , Reflection or "Critical Reflection" , refers to an activity or process in which an experience is recalled , considered and evaluated , usually in relation to a broader purpose . It is a response to past experience and involves conscious recall and examination of the experience as a basis for evaluation and decision making and as a source for planning and action .Also Reflective teaching implies a systematic process of collecting , recording and analysing our thoughts and observations, as well as those of our students, and then going on to making changes. The teachers / teacher educators identify a variety of different aspects of their lessons like organization of the lesson, teacher's time management , student's performance on tasks, time-consuming on - task, teacher questions and student responses , student performance during pair , group work , classroom interaction, class performance during a new teaching activity .. etc . After that they explore their own teaching through critical reflection and develope changes in attitudes and awareness which they believe for their benefit in professional growth as teachers, as well as improve the kind of support they provide their students. This is the real reflective approach in teaching which involves changes in the way we usually perceive teaching and our role in the process of teaching .As a Teacher Educator of DIET Khordha I understood the value of reflective teaching and applied myself . My student teachers also applied this in their internship program ( when they deliver their lessons in elementary schools ) . Thank You Respected Lipimadam for sharing the article which gives me a more and clear idea about reflection, reflective teaching , it's importance and it's ways of application . Of course we must elaborately discuss about this in our PLC as it is a cyclic and systematic process of self observation and self evaluation . Thank You
