Reflective Teaching for Professional Development

 Dear students

Last week we have completed a discussion on Critical thinking. This week we are going to discuss Reflective teaching. As Teacher educators we need to reflect on different activities - classroom teaching, doing research, taking sessions in the training, providing support to teachers / CRCCs.

In this connection, reflect on our activities is the first step towards professional development.
I am attaching the link of one handout and one video on reflective teaching.
Hope these two resources shall help you in comprehending the concept.

Write your own understanding of Reflective teaching and what does a reflective teacher educator looks like. Post your views here.
Happy reading.

  1. Thank you Madam for sharing this article. Reflection is an active process of witnessing one's own experience in order to examine it more closely, give meaning to It and learn from it.so as a teacher/teacher educators we must reflect on our own experience and analyze our action for better learning outcomes. For professional development of teachers/Educators,they must think over the teaching practices, analyze how something was taught and how the practice might be improved for better understanding of the learners.
Similarly it is very essential to reflect on the why's,how's and what ifs as well because our aim is not to recognize what happens in the classroom. So we must reflect on our teaching practices and evaluate ourselves for better learning outcomes and hence it leads to professional development of the teachers.

  2. Thank you so much madam for sending video and Reflection note on "Reflective teaching for professional Development" which is very important part of our teaching. In this video it shows that there are three elements of reflection that is Reflexion on action , reflection for action and reflection in action . But in your part you have described on two elements of reflection that is in and on reflection in teaching. Reflective teaching is a process that facilitates teaching, learning and understanding and it plays a central role on teachers professional development. As a Teacher Educator we should give importance on reflective teaching for our professional development. As a result of reflection , we may decide to do something in a different way or may decide that what we will do to show our best. Therefore being a teacher educator we need to reflect on the experience and activities that will help us for our professional growth. In short by developing knowledge and understanding the setting practice and the ability to identify and react to the problems will help us to become a effective teacher.
As a teacher educator we can deal with the
Needs and different issues of the learners and demand of the time if we reflect on our daily teaching learning activities for our professional debdevelopm. To deal and survive on our professional field, we needs to develop and bring changes in our behaviour and style . Reflection is a flash back that teacher need to mediate for their development.

    Thank you

  3. Thank you madam for sharing the handout on reflective teaching and a video also. The materials are informative. Today we are saying about the need of continuous professional development. NCFTE also revealed on reflective teaching practice in teacher education institutions with respect to preparing professional and reflective teacher. So being a Teacher Educator we need to practice it in our daily activities conducted in side and out side the classroom. The types of reflection i.e. reflection for action, on action and in action will help us to plan for our session effectively, reflect on each part of our action while conducting the activities and analyzing the strength and weakness of the session at the end.For this Reflective questions should be asked by self in each step. Reflective thinking will definitely bring a positive change in our classroom process. Practicing reflective teaching needs few steps like- defining specific objective for the session, planning session, action in the session, self observation at each step and writing reflection note for each session. As a whole reflective teaching practice is required at all stages of education for ensuring attainment of learning outcome.

  4. Thank u so much madam for sharing such a valuable material for us.
In teaching learning process reflection is an important part which helps us not only improving our self but also improves our academic skills. In reflective teaching we reflect our action thoroughly ,what we have done in our class by the same time we are re thinking about why we have done these activities for the students and how far it could be better. Reflection is nothing but asking our self, discussing with our own, making sense of things and learning from our experience, which help us to plan future activities [ like designing new strategies /methods of teaching, developing varieties of questions for different level and different type of students, for Co-curricular activities, as a whole attaining class wise learning outcomes ] for our classes or in daily life also. This may be from events or our +ve & -ve experiences.
In the video it tells about 3 types of reflections. Reflection –for- action helps us to plan before taking the classes, what methods of teaching should we use for the benefit for our students. During –in –action helps us to change immediately the way of teaching by observing students grasping capacity whereas Reflection –on-action takes place after teaching ,that helps to reflect whether the activities are appropriate for students or not &hence we may change them in our future classes.
If we truly Reflect for/in/on action ,it helps us to understand learning strategies for students, learning barriers of different types of students[ CWSN, if any] and also helps to improve quality of teaching. So Reflective teaching means of professional development , which is highly necessary and we have to practice it.

  5. Thank you very much madam for sharing this blog.Being a teacher educator we should always think over our teaching practices.Whether it needs to improve or whether it achieved the objective by analysing all these things we can plan or improve our teaching practices.Reflective teaching is a part of our class room teaching learning process and it helps in self- evaluation and self-observation of what we do in our classroom and why we do it? Reflection also focus on recognising what is going well and thinking why it is going well? It is also important for a teacher to ensure more involvement of student before and during the class activities. For this there are two forms of reflection first one is reflection in action and second one is reflection on action. For consistent improvement reflection in action and thinking about overall outcomes of the acting in a logical way is reflection. Development of reflective practice is essential for professional growth.

  6. Thank You Respected Lipimadam for sending the video and Reflective note on " Reflective teaching for professional development .
Reflection is a basic part of teaching and learning process .It is also a process of self observation and self evaluation .In 2020 schools were closed due to Covid-19 and forced to deploy a new approach to teaching and learning and teachers started delivering Online and Blended teaching .So many challenges came and teachers should reflect on those teaching learning process . Because Reflecting teaching for a teacher means looking at what the teachers do in the classroom and thinking about why he / she do it and thinking about if it works .By Reflecting teaching Teachers benefit a lot . One major part is it includes planning the sessions , analyzing and improveing the previous sessions to improve lesson deliver techniques and develop a better understanding of topics as a teacher . Also it helps in professional growth , enhance Innovation and problem solving , facilitate teaching , Boost teacher Student relationship . Hence as a Teacher Educator / Teacher we must Reflect in our Teaching . After each and every class the process should carry on . I am as a Teacher Educator trying my best to reflect in every phase of my Teaching Learning process .

  8. Thank u so much madam for sharing this piece of article based on reflective teaching. It is very important for us to reflect our own classroom practices for better improvement. Because our reflection will help to establish a good academic climate.Reflection is an important part of teaching learning process bcos through reflection we can know our strength and limitations and by knowing this we can change our teaching learning methods. May be we remove some methods and adopt some new strategies during reflection. Reflection is mainly based our own experience and we can prepare lesson plan basing on previous class discussion. It also ensure more participation of students during the classroom transaction. Reflection is nothing but to analyse our own methods of study and think what changes should done to perform better in future. Reflection is of 3 types such as reflection for action, on action and in action. It is a process of self evaluation and self observation.Being a teacher educator and also our student teachers should reflect ourselves for future betterment. Reflection must aim to achieve our objectives by repeated planning and practice.

  9. Thank you madam for sharing with us this article and video This has really boosted up our thinking on reflection. Reflection in teaching learning process is a must because it not only improves our thinking but also our action in practical situation. The teacher faces lots of challenges during her transactions in the classclassroom, dealing wirh the students ,choosing the appropriate strategies, instructional materials etc.and reflection is the tool which helps to give feedback to the teacher whether she/he is in the right track or not.It helps the teacher to analyse everything tgat happens during the transaction with the students. This type of self awareness is very helpful for the teacher especially how they teach which can change the moment spent with the students. So it is very true that reflection helps in the professional development of the teacher and for every big event to happen it should start with a small thing .To bring qualitativeness in teaching learning process reflection should start from classroom transcation

  10. Thank you madam for sharing such a nice article.Really, reflection is an integral part of our teaching learning process.Without reflection one can't think further. It includes thinking and rethinking about one's performance during and after class activities. As it develops self awareness and provides opportunities for self observation and self evaluation we will able to know our strength and weaknesses. This will help us to create and explore new ideas and techniques to bring improvement in our teaching strategies. As a teacher educator while preparing the future teachers it is not only important to know and teach what is happening but also important to know and teach why and how itis happening which will lead to our professional development and also the development of future teachers. So, we should focus on both reflection in and on action for better learning outcome and also for our professional development.
