Dear friends
In my last post , we have discussed about digital learning and the required skills. The link was derived from the book on "Teaching in a digital age". During this covid 19 lock down period, we have experienced different online tools and also used it in our classroom process. Today I am posting an excerpt from the book. How online learning could be collaborative ? How to generate ideas, organize and converge ideas collaboratively. There are also many online tools for collaborative learning. Hope you find this piece of writing an interesting one.
Thank you all.
Happy reading
Best regards

Thank you madam for this Article. Now a days we are focusing more on online collaborative learning. The inclusion of collaborative activities in an online course leads to positive students performance outcomes. collaborative group interaction facilitate active learning, shared knowledge and promote social interaction and a supportive learning.
ReplyDeleteLearning within the online environment, often termed as "eLearning", differs from the traditional classroom learning community. Unlike traditional classroom learning opportunities, online learning environments foster additional learning experiences where learners can interact, collaborate, and take ownership of their own learning. Developing effective collaborative online activities begins with understanding the research and how learners process information when online. Educators of online learning environments must focus on instructional and pedagogical best practices in order to deliver effective online instruction.
Now a days in this Covid-19 lock down period we are using collaborative learning not in classroom but in online mode by using different online app and tool like Zoom app., WhatsApp, Google hangout, Edmodo, yanmmel,Skype, Facebook, Testmoz, H5p, twiddal, different videos, ppt and images etc. For giving our lecture, presentation or discussion, for students assessment and giving assignment for which we have to plan it before taking our class. Here we need to know exactly what we are going to Introduce to our students, how students can succeed with lesson, what may cause them to fail and more.
Many of the strengths and challenges of collaborative learning apply both in face to face or online learning context. It could be argued that there is no or little different between online collaborative learning and well conducted traditional classroom discussion based teaching. However there is enough evidence that collaborative learning can be done just as well online, which is important given the need for more flexible models of delivery to meet the needs of a more diverse students body in digital age. Also, the necessary way conditions for success in teaching this are now known, even through they are not always universally applied.
Thank you
Thank you sikha. As learning is social in nature, so collaboration is highly essential to expand our zone of actual development. In this lockdown period also, we can sustain collaborative learning among the faculty and also with the students. You have mentioned few online platforms where we can exchange our ideas.
DeleteMadam u have shared a very good article based on online collaborative learning which is a new mode of learning process. In our normal classroom we r using the collaborative method of teaching which is very much effective n participatory also but online mode is something different than the previous one. In online, the physical presence of a teacher not required we can collaboratively discuss any toipc from distance also. But for that we have to design plans for better implementation
ReplyDeleteCOI n OCL are complementary to each other rather than competing. In this particular CoVid- 19 situation we r using different online tools to teach our students because it is impossible to meet physically. This OCL has different strengths n Weaknesses but still it is a good method of teaching learning process. We can share our thoughts, ideas, knowledge, concepts even if we r far away from each other. Thank u madam for sharing this piece of article.
Thank u
Thanks for the feedback. It's essential to use online collaborative tool. Both learning and assessment should be collaborative. In this lockdown period, not only we are focusing on online but also collaborative tools. Let us explore more collaborative tools.
DeleteWe are now in 21st century .In this digital age we are acquainted with digital learning collaboratively .DIET Khordha , BIET Gorumahisiani , other DIETs of Odisha giving various trainings through online . During this pandemic period ( COVID 19) other departments are also performing work from home .In this article discussion is about OCL and CoL .On line Collaborative Theory (OCL)encourages learner to learn by doing .Here learner involves individually though they are in group .Three principles of OCL are Idea generating , Organising , Intellectual convergence . Community of Inquiry Model (CoL) is same to OCL . Advantages of OCL are it leads to deep academic learning or transformative learning and directly it support the development of a range of high level intellectual skills such as Critical thinking, analytical thinking , synthesis, evaluation .. .We must follow these theories for the development of teaching learning process .Thank You Respected Lipimadam for sharing such a educational article .
ReplyDeleteThanks for the feedback.Good response. Many times though we are using online tools but it becomes unidirectional. Let us explore the multi directional tools where everyone has the equal right to contribute and help others to develop their ideas. In this connection collaborative learning through online mode plays a crucial role.
ReplyDeleteAs we already know ,Collaborative learning (CL) is an educational approach to teaching and learning that involves groups of learners working together to solve a problem, complete a task, or create a product. If this occurs through online mode then it is called Online Collaborative learning (OCL)
ReplyDeleteDuring this luckdown period as face to face teaching mode is impossible ,hence we use different online tools and techniques like- Zoom app., WhatsApp, Google hangout, Edmodo, Skype, Facebook, Testmoz, H5p,Free cam studio ,U-tube videos and PPTs. In this mode of eaching wecan use Online Collaborative learning (OCL) but, simply assigning students into a group and asking them to work collaboratively will not guarantee that they will collaborate.
For effective collaboration pro motive interaction is required, which exists when group members act as trustworthy by acknowledging and challenging each other’s ideas and facilitating each other’s efforts. Students can share their work progress and obtain feedback from other members. Yet, the students also reported that difficulties in doing online classes due to different time-zones, and the unique challenges caused by not being able to communicate face-to-face.
The benefits of online collaborative learning include: development of higher-level thinking, oral communication, self-management, and leadership skills. But with online collaborative learning, the aim is not to replace the teacher, but to use the technology primarily to increase and improve communication between teacher and learners, with a particular approach to the development of learning based on knowledge construction assisted and developed through social discourse. By using core design principles of OCL that are idea generating, idea organising and intellectual convergence students as well as teachers can be benefitted.
Community of Inquiry Model (CoI) is somewhat similar to the OCL model. The two models (OCL and CoI) are also more complementary rather than competing.
[ I need little clarification about the above statement ]
Thank you so much for sharing such a informative article .
